Are waterproof jackets really waterproof?

A common question asked by many when going out in wet weather? Many people will buy a waterproof jacket and expect it to perform as it promises, but this is not always the case. The truth is that many garments available claim to be ‘waterproof’ but they really should say’ water-resistant jackets’.

Remember that wearing a waterproof/water-resistant jacket is only one part of staying dry in the rain. The best way to stay dry in any season is by taking preventative action before it rains.

First, make sure you apply your DWR spray to all fabric surfaces (not just exterior fabrics).

Another thing to consider when buying a jacket or other gear is whether or not it’s breathable enough for your liking. You may need to try some on in person or buy from a retailer with a good return policy so if they don’t work out you can return them hassle.

1) Firstly think about how you will be using your jacket – if it’s mainly for wet weather or an occasional use then this shouldn’t matter much since all waterproofs are water-resistant to some degree, but read labels carefully and don’t just rely on fancy words like Guaranteed to keep you dry. Try to find something that is rated to at least 5,000mm water column.

2) The next point of interest should be breathability – if you are looking for a raincoat that will keep your skin warm in the cold weather then choose one with fully taped seams and a high neck (ideally with a peaked hood). For wet environments go for garments made from polyurethane rather than PU since they promote better air circulation.

3) Make sure it’s comfortable to wear; don’t forget that warmth, waterproofing and breathability aren’t all that matters when heading out into bad weather – comfort and practicality play their part too.
